Fitted Bookcases, Libraries & Panelling

Fitted work is commissioned through Bryn Hall in exactly the same way as a table or a dresser, and it is made in the same Suffolk workshop, by the same people, to the same drawings and the same standard.

Bookcases and libraries. Panelling. Fitted wardrobes and dressing rooms. Alcove cabinets either side of a chimney breast. Window seats. A whole room, done as one piece of work.

Why clients ask us for it

The request nearly always arrives the same way. Somebody has had a dresser or a set of chairs from us, likes them, and now has a room that needs shelving. They would rather not start again with a firm they do not know.

That is a reasonable instinct, and the answer is yes. The people who made your dining table make the library.

There is also a practical argument. When freestanding and fitted work are made by two different firms, the two rarely agree. The mouldings are close but not the same. The oak is a different cut. The shade is a shade out, and it is the sort of difference you cannot unsee once you have noticed it.

Made in one workshop, they agree because they are built from the same drawings, in timber cut from the same selection, and polished in the same finishing shop against the same reference. A fitted bookcase can carry the raised and fielded panels of the Denbigh range, or the plain heavy sections of Oakamoor, so the room reads as one decision.

What we make

Fitted bookcases. From a single run in an alcove to a wall of shelving with a door built through the middle of it. Adjustable or fixed shelves, cupboards or drawers below, glazed doors above, cornice scribed to the ceiling and plinth scribed to the floor.

Libraries. The full treatment: floor to ceiling, returns around the window reveals, a ladder rail where the height calls for one, a desk built in as part of the scheme. Our library work is usually the largest single commission a client places with us.

Panelling. Raised and fielded, plain framed, or run as a dado with a moulded rail. Panelling is the fastest way to make a modern room hold period furniture properly, because it gives the furniture something to stand against.

Fitted wardrobes and dressing rooms. Hanging, shelving and drawers laid out around what you actually own, with doors and mouldings matched to the bedroom furniture already in the room.

Alcove and chimney-breast cabinetry. The most common request of all, and the one where a couple of millimetres matters most. Alcoves are never square, never the same on both sides, and never plumb. Scribing is part of the work, not an afterthought.

Rooms. A study, a boot room, a snug, a dining room with panelling, a server built into the wall and a table to match.

How it is different from a freestanding piece

Three things change.

We measure on site rather than working from your figures. A wall that is 12mm out over two metres is normal. A drawing made from a nominal dimension will not fit it.

Drawings come first, always. Fitted work sits at the second or third level of the bespoke ladder, so it is drawn and approved before anything is cut.

Installation is part of the job. The work is made in the workshop, brought in, scribed and fitted, and finished on site where the finishing needs to happen there. That is the same team, not a subcontractor.

Lead times are quoted individually. A fitted room takes longer than the ten to twelve weeks a catalogue piece takes, and we will give you a realistic figure once we have measured.

Bryn Hall is the furniture name. Freestanding pieces, and fitted work that belongs with furniture: bookcases, libraries, panelling, wardrobes, alcove cabinetry, a room done as a scheme. If that is what you want, commission it here and we will handle it end to end.

Timber, finish and detail

Fitted work uses the same four standard timbers — oak, cherry, mahogany and walnut — and the same specials: character oak, pippy oak, timber selected for medullary ray, and clean timber with no knots.

It uses the same finishes: polished, painted, limed, sand-blasted, rub-through paint, natural, or colour matched to a sample. A painted library with an oak-topped desk is a common and very good combination.

Where modern and sheet materials improve strength or carry a decorative element better than solid timber would, we use them and we tell you where. On a wall of shelving carrying several hundred kilos of books, that is an engineering decision.
