A range is a set of design decisions, carried consistently. The same panel treatment, the same mouldings below the top, the same handles and hinges, the same proportions in the framework. Specify a dresser and a chest of drawers from the same range and they will read as one family across a room, because they were drawn as one.
Ranges are named after British places. Most are named after Welsh and border towns and counties, which is where the names came from when the ranges were drawn.
How ranges and bespoke fit together
A range is where a conversation starts, not where it ends. Nothing is a stock item, so a range is best understood as a set of details we already know how to make well, applied to whatever you actually need.
In practice that means three things. You can take a range piece and change its size, its timber, its finish and its ironmongery. You can ask for a piece that does not exist in a range yet, drawn in that range’s language, so it sits with the pieces you already own. Or you can borrow details across ranges, which happens more often than you might think.
If a detail matters to you, say so. It is easier to allow for it in the drawing than to explain later why it could not be done. Start with how commissioning works and order free timber and finish samples.
The ten collections
Denbigh is the flagship and the most formal thing we make. Eighteenth-century cabinetmaking, done properly: raised and fielded panelled door fronts, framed side panels, cock beaded flat drawer fronts, moulded detail below the top and above the doors, and solid ironmongery including exposed butt hinges and swan neck handles. Everything is about the accuracy of the framework around the doors and drawers.
Oakamoor is the opposite argument. Chunky, plain and timber-led, with almost no decoration, because the decoration is the wood. Strong substantial legs with a small bevel to the inside edge, a simple historic frieze between them, and generous width in the front frame pieces so the patternation of the oak has room to show.
Pendleton is the farmhouse dining table. Quintessential tapered legs, or the Pendleton turned leg if you prefer, and a large top that works for dining or for kitchen use. Frequently specified with a painted base, a pippy oak top and draw-leaves, so more guests can be seated without giving up floor space day to day.
Ruthin is a dresser and rack with a matching base, and it sits between Denbigh’s formality and Oakamoor’s plainness. Welsh country in character, but ordered.
Montgomeryshire is a dresser and rack in three- and four-drawer configurations, with an architectural base variant that carries a stronger cornice and plinth treatment for rooms with height to fill.
Rowton is defined by its caddy top: a moulded, slightly raised top edge that frames whatever is set on it. The range covers a side table, a chest and a coffee table with potboard, and is often specified in cherry.
Windrush is limed oak dresser bases, four doors above a row of four drawers. The limed finish is the defining characteristic and the reason people choose it, because it lifts the grain and keeps the piece light in a dark room.
Gothic brings pointed-arch tracery and ecclesiastical detail to beds, dressing tables, bedside cabinets, wardrobes and dresser bases. Often made in cherry, which suits the carving.
Coach House is a chair range: carver and single chairs with a carved top panel back. It is the pattern to look at if you want dining chairs with weight and presence rather than a light country chair.
Georgian covers Georgian-style dresser bases and bookcases, and takes the painted base with a pippy or standard oak top particularly well.
Ranges beyond these ten
Several other named patterns run alongside the ten above, including Corwen, the Denbighshire Tridan, the Sussex extending table, and the Glendale, Queendale, Henbury and Barton chairs. Timbers and finishes across every range
Every catalogue piece is priced in oak, cherry, mahogany and walnut. Character oak, pippy oak in light, medium and heavy grades for tops, oak selected for medullary ray and clean timber with no knots at all are all available on application.
Finishes include polished, painted, limed, sand-blasted, rub-through paint and natural, and we will colour match to a sample you send us.
