This page is for people specifying furniture for someone else. It sets out how we work, what we need from you and when, and what you can tell a client with confidence. What we are
Bryn Hall makes freestanding English furniture to order — tables, chairs, dressers, sideboards, beds, wardrobes, desks and cabinets — at Stonham Road, Mickfield, near Stowmarket in Suffolk. Everything is drawn, made, polished and delivered by the same workshop. Nothing is bought in and badged.
There are ten named ranges, but they are starting points rather than a product list. Nothing is held in stock and nothing has a fixed size, so a piece is specified rather than selected.
Timber and finish
Every catalogue piece is priced in four standard timbers — oak, cherry, mahogany and walnut. Oak is the baseline; cherry sits a little above it, and mahogany and walnut are appreciably dearer. Every catalogue piece is priced in all four, so the difference is visible before a client decides. Character oak, pippy oak, oak selected for medullary ray, knot-free timber, burr oak and burr walnut are available and priced individually, because availability depends on what is in the stack.
Finishes are polished, painted, limed, sand-blasted, rub-through or left natural, and any of them can be colour matched to a sample you send. If you are working to a paint reference or matching existing joinery, send the reference or a physical sample at the drawing stage.
Chairs follow the same rule. Every chair pattern is made in all four timbers, and the one exception is the Windsor, whose frame is ash because the bow is steam-bent.
What we need from you
Room dimensions taken at floor level and again where the furniture actually sits, because a chimney breast or a radiator can remove four or five inches without anyone noticing until the piece is in the room. Door widths, corridor widths and staircase turns if the piece is large. Photographs of the room. Any piece the new work has to sit beside, photographed in daylight.
If you are matching to something the client already owns, a small physical component we can colour match against is worth more than any number of photographs. A spare drawer, an offcut, a piece of the original moulding.
Drawings
Every commission is drawn before anything is cut, and drawn in elevation and section, with full-size setting-out where a moulding or a carved panel warrants it, so proportions are settled on paper rather than discovered at the bench. You will see the drawing and sign it off before the timber is touched. If you need the drawing in a particular format to drop into your own set, ask when you enquire and we will tell you what we can do.
Lead times
A standard design is normally twelve weeks from order to delivery, and up to sixteen when the workshop is busy. A genuine one-off usually adds about four weeks on top. The date is confirmed when the order is placed, not estimated at enquiry — so if you are writing a programme, ring and ask rather than working from this paragraph.
Delivery and installation
Two-person delivery into the room of your choice, assembled on site, with the packaging taken away. Where access is tight we carry out an access survey first. We would rather find the problem at survey than on delivery day with a client watching.
One workshop, a whole house
Bryn Hall is a trading name of Reeve & Co Interiors Ltd, and the same building makes the fitted work. Reeve & Co Interiors does panelling, libraries, staircases and whole-house joinery; Square & True makes the kitchens; Sporting Cabinetmakers makes gun cabinets and sporting storage.
The practical consequence for a specifier is finish matching. A freestanding dresser, a fitted boot room and a kitchen can be made from the same stack and polished to the same sample, by the same people, which is very difficult to achieve across three separate suppliers.
Pricing basis
Bryn Hall prices include VAT. Note that this differs from Reeve & Co Interiors, which is trade-facing and quotes plus VAT, so if you are pulling figures from more than one part of the group, check which basis you are reading.
Samples
Timber and finish samples are £10 each, or £30 for all four timbers, posted free and refunded against the order. If you keep a materials library, say so and tell us what you need in it.
Visiting
The workshop is at Stonham Road, Mickfield, Stowmarket, Suffolk IP14 5LS, and visits are by appointment. It is a working shop rather than a showroom, which is the point — you see the pieces that are on the bench that week, and the people making them. Directions and what to expect.
Do you work with interior designers and architects?
Regularly, and on both sides — sometimes drawing to your specification, sometimes developing a piece from a brief and a room. Tell us which you want at the enquiry stage.
Can I see a drawing before committing a client?
Yes. Everything is drawn before it is made and signed off before timber is cut.
Can you match furniture to joinery or a kitchen elsewhere in the house?
Yes, and it is one of the reasons to use us. The fitted joinery, the kitchens and the freestanding furniture are all made in the same building, so a finish can be matched across all three from one sample.
Are your prices plus or including VAT?
Bryn Hall prices include VAT. Reeve and Co Interiors, which is trade-facing, quotes plus VAT — so check which part of the group a figure has come from.
What do you need to quote?
The piece, the size, the timber and the finish, plus room dimensions and access if it is large. If you are matching something, photographs in daylight and ideally a physical component.
How far do you deliver?
Throughout the UK, with two-person delivery into the room and assembly on site. Tell us about staircases and door widths early.
