A desk and a bookcase are working furniture. They should be made for the way you actually work rather than to a catalogue dimension.
The pedestal desk is the traditional form: a writing surface carried on two banks of drawers, with a knee-hole between them. It can be made with a leather or timber top, and the drawer arrangement changed to suit — files one side, stationery the other, or a cupboard in place of drawers. Bookcases are made to the wall they are going against and to the books they are holding; shelf heights matter more than people expect, and adjustable shelves in a fixed carcase are usually the right answer.
Both are made to order in solid oak, cherry, mahogany or walnut. If the desk and the bookcase are going in the same room, they are drawn together and finish-matched so they read as a pair rather than two separate purchases.
