Free Timber and Finish Samples

Free oak, cherry, mahogany and walnut samples posted out, with our finishes. See the colours in your own light before you decide anything. No obligation.

We will post you two timber and finish samples, free of charge, so you can see the real colours in your own light. It commits you to nothing.

Fill in the form below and we will put them in the post.

Why this is worth doing before anything else

Timber photographs badly. Oak, cherry, mahogany and walnut all look entirely different under a north light, a south light and a lamp at seven in the evening, and no screen will tell you which one you want.

Put the samples on the floor where the piece will stand. Hold them against your walls, against the skirting, against a piece you already own. Look at them in the morning and again after dark, and leave them there for a few days before deciding.

If you are matching an existing piece, this is the whole ball game. Colour is judged against the real thing, in the real room, or it is not judged properly.

What we can send

The four standard timbers: oak, cherry, mahogany and walnut. Every catalogue piece is priced in all four.

The specials: character oak, which shows knots, ray flecking and the life of the tree, and pippy oak, which is heavily flecked and used for tops.

Finishes, including polished, painted, limed, sand-blasted and rub-through paint, so you can see what a finish does to a timber rather than guessing.

We send two samples per request, posted free. Two is usually the right number, because choosing is a comparison rather than a survey: oak against cherry, or polished against limed, tells you far more than six pieces of wood spread across a table.

Tell us what you are thinking about and we will choose the two sensibly on your behalf. If you would rather compare two shades of the same timber side by side, ask for that instead. If you get them home and find you want to see something else, ask again and we will post two more.

The piece you have in mind — free text, optional. A dining table, a dresser base for an alcove, a bed. One line is plenty.

Are you matching an existing piece? — yes / no. If yes, a free text box: tell us what it is, roughly how old, and whether you can send a photograph.

Nothing beyond your name, email and address is required. If you have no idea where to start, say so and we will pick the two most useful for what you have described.

What happens next

The samples arrive by post. Nobody rings you the following morning.

When you are ready, tell us what you have decided and we will quote against a proper specification. If you would like a hand narrowing it down, ring 01449 710500 and describe the room.

We keep your details only to send the samples and to answer any enquiry that follows. See our privacy notice.

While you wait

Read how commissioning works, from first conversation to delivery, or request the catalogue.

Standard designs typically take ten to twelve weeks to make, and a genuine one-off usually adds around four weeks. It is worth knowing that before you fall for something.
