Why samples matter
Timber photographs badly. Oak, cherry, mahogany and walnut all change under daylight and lamplight, and no screen can show you how a finish will sit against your walls, skirting or existing furniture.
Put the samples where the piece will stand and look at them at different times of day. If you are matching an existing piece, tell us at the outset; it changes how we select the timber and build the finish.
Not sure which timbers?
Tell us what you are considering and we will choose the two most useful samples for the conversation. You can request a comparison of two timbers, two finishes, or a timber and finish combination. Requests are reviewed so that the samples are relevant rather than a bundle of unrelated pieces.
What we can send
Our standard timbers are oak, cherry, mahogany and walnut, with character oak and pippy oak available for suitable pieces. Finishes include polished, painted, limed, sand-blasted, rub-through paint and natural, undistressed finishes.
Two samples per request is normally the right number: choosing is a comparison, not a survey. If you need to compare something different after seeing them in the room, contact us and we will advise on the next useful pair.
Timber and colour are two separate decisions. The timber samples show you the grain; the colour range shows you the finish. Our standard colours are Light, Medium and Dark, which go on any of the oaks, and Mahogany and Walnut, which go on those timbers. The set of all five is £50, refunded against your order, and if none of them is right we colour-match to a paint chip, a photograph or a piece you already own.
What happens next
We review the request and post the selected samples to you. When you are ready, tell us the piece, timber, finish and approximate size and we will quote against a proper specification.
Standard designs normally take twelve weeks, and up to sixteen when the workshop is busy to make. A genuine one-off usually adds around four weeks. Read how commissioning works or download the catalogue while you decide.
