About the furniture
Is Bryn Hall furniture solid wood?
Yes. Our pieces are made from solid timber. Modern and sheet materials are used where they genuinely improve strength or hold a decorative element flat, and we say so plainly rather than pretending otherwise. It is a quality decision, not a compromise.
Where is the furniture made?
In our own workshop at Stonham Road, Mickfield, near Stowmarket in Suffolk. Design, cabinetmaking, carving, turning, polishing and delivery all happen under one roof, which is why there is one point of responsibility if something needs putting right.
Is any of it in stock?
No. Nothing here is a stock item. Every piece is made from scratch to your dimensions, in your timber, in your colour. The catalogue is a starting point rather than a menu, which is also why the site is enquiry-led and has no basket.
Do you only make period and reproduction furniture?
Bryn Hall is best known for period and reproduction work, and that is where most enquiries begin. The same construction and finishing go into clean contemporary pieces. If what you want is plain, modern and precise, we make that to the same standard.
Do you make fitted furniture as well?
Yes. Bookcases, panelling, wardrobes and whole rooms can be commissioned through Bryn Hall and are made in the same workshop. For full architectural and whole-house joinery, our sister company Reeve & Co Interiors handles it.
Timbers and finishes
Which timbers can I choose from?
Every catalogue piece is priced in four: oak, cherry, mahogany and walnut. Ash is used for Windsor chair frames. Burr oak and burr walnut appear in particular pieces. See timbers for how each behaves.
What is character oak, and what is pippy oak?
Character oak shows the life of the tree: knots, colour variation, medullary ray flecking and fine shakes. It carries a surcharge on tables. Pippy oak is heavily flecked with small dormant-bud clusters, comes in light, medium and heavy grades, and is used for tops only.
Can I have oak with no knots at all?
Yes. Clean timber with no knots, and timber selected for its medullary ray, within or without the timber, are both available. Both are priced on application because they need careful selection at the board stage.
What finishes do you offer?
Polished, painted, limed, sand-blasted, rub-through paint, natural undistressed, and colour matched to a sample you send us. Painted bases with pippy or standard oak tops are a signature Pendleton and Georgian treatment. See finishes for what each looks like.
Can you match the colour of a piece I already own?
Yes, and it is a large part of what we do. We can match furniture that is 100 years old to new reproduction purchases made the year before. Send a photograph and, where possible, a small sample or a drawer to work from. Colour matching is priced on application.
Bespoke and sizes
Can I have a catalogue piece in a different size?
Yes, and most clients do. A few millimetres to fit an alcove, a deeper top, a different moulding or different handles are all routine, and usually need no new drawing.
What if I want something you do not make?
Then it is a one-off commission. Our designers draw it first, whether it is details amalgamated from several of our designs or an idea entirely of your own, and you approve the drawing before anything is cut. See how commissioning works.
Can you make a matching piece for furniture I already have?
Yes. Matching antique or existing furniture is one of our strongest specialities, and covers form, mouldings, ironmongery and colour. Tell us at the enquiry stage rather than later, because it changes how we select timber. See matching antique furniture.
Ordering, prices and lead times
How long does a piece take to make?
Standard designs typically take ten to twelve weeks from order to delivery. A genuine one-off bespoke piece typically adds around four weeks. These are typical guidance rather than a contractual promise, and we would rather say that than quote a date we cannot hold.
Do you publish prices?
Prices are quoted against your specification: the piece, the timber, the finish, the dimensions and the ironmongery. Catalogue pieces are priced in all four standard timbers. Character oak, pippy oak, colour matching and natural finishes are priced on application because of the extra selection or polishing time.
How do I place an order?
We quote in writing against an agreed specification, and the quotation holds for 30 days. An order is confirmed by your written acceptance and a deposit of 50 per cent, with the balance due seven days before delivery. Payment is by card, bank transfer or against a Xero invoice, and prices are inclusive of VAT. Full detail is on the commissioning page and in our terms.
Can I cancel or change an order?
Changes are far easier before making begins, which is why we ask you to be difficult at drawing stage. Because everything is made to your own specification, an order cannot be cancelled once it is in production, and deposits are not refundable. Goods made to a consumer’s specification are exempt from the usual 14-day cancellation right under the Consumer Contracts Regulations. Tell us as early as you can and we will do what we sensibly can.
Delivery and aftercare
Do you deliver, and where?
We deliver with two of our own people, into the room of your choice, and we take the packaging away. Beds and large pieces are assembled on site. Our own team covers roughly 100 miles from Mickfield; beyond that we arrange delivery and quote it. Delivery is included in the price within 150 miles, and on any order over £10,000. See delivery.
What if my staircase or doorway is tight?
Tell us early and we will survey the access, at no charge. Where necessary we build the piece so it comes apart into sections that will make the turn. Four posters, breakfront wardrobes and large dressers are assembled in the room.
Do you deliver outside mainland UK?
We are happy to discuss it, but it is handled as an enquiry rather than a standard service. Northern Ireland, the Scottish islands, the Channel Islands and international destinations are quoted individually, because crating, carriage, insurance and customs all vary. Send us the destination address.
How should I look after it?
Dust with a dry cloth, use mats and coasters, keep pieces away from radiators and strong direct sun, and watch the humidity in a centrally heated house. Our care guide covers waxing, water rings, leather tops, limed finishes and underfloor heating.
Is the furniture guaranteed?
Yes, and the term is a long one. The structure — the frame, the carcase and the joints — is guaranteed for as long as you own the piece. Drawer and door fitting, ironmongery and finish are guaranteed for ten years from delivery. The guarantee covers the original client and is not transferable. Who makes Bryn Hall furniture now?
The same workshop that always did. Reeve & Co made every piece of Bryn Hall furniture for thirty years. The Phillips family, who built the name in the British antiques and reproduction trade, have retired, and the workshop that made it now carries the name.
Has the furniture changed since the acquisition?
No. The same benches, the same hands, the same drawings and the same finishing shop. The trading entity is Reeve & Co Interiors Ltd trading as Bryn Hall, and that line was already on the 2016 price list. What has changed is that you commission directly from the makers.
Can I visit the workshop?
Yes, by appointment, between 9.00am and 5.00pm Monday to Friday. You are welcome to come to Mickfield and see work on the bench, and there is plenty of parking on site. Ring 01449 710500 or arrange a visit.
Are the timber samples really free?
Yes. Two samples are posted free with every request, and ordering them commits you to nothing. Timber and finish samples let you see the colours in your own light, against your own walls, before deciding anything. Order samples.
