We make seven forms of dining table, and the difference between them is not decoration — it is legs, length, and whether the table needs to change size. The refectory is the long table on a stretchered base, with the legs at the extreme ends so nobody sits astride one. The farmhouse is the plainer country form with legs at the corners. The pedestal carries its top on turned columns rather than legs, which frees the ends entirely. Drawleaf and gateleg tables change size in about a minute; the extending table takes loose leaves; and the monk’s table folds down from a settle when floor space is scarce.
Every one is made to order in solid oak, cherry, mahogany or walnut, to your own length and width. Measure the room before the table: allow 900mm from the table edge to the nearest wall or piece of furniture so chairs can pull out and somebody can walk behind. Then count the worst case rather than the average — the number that matters is Christmas, not Tuesday.
